How Do You Know If You Are Minnesotan?

Minnesota is a special place…and we are told all the time that our accents give it away. It’s a state where people will hold the door for you, apologize when you bump into them, and still find a way to talk about the weather for at least five minutes every single day. Whether you grew up here or recently moved to the Land of 10,000 Lakes, there are certain telltale signs that prove you’ve fully embraced the Minnesota lifestyle. But, how do you know if you are Minnesotan?…..

If any of the statements below sound familiar, there’s a good chance you’re officially one of us.

You might be from Minnesota if… winter coats have levels.

People outside the Midwest think a coat is just a coat. In Minnesota, we know there’s a difference between a “light jacket,” a “real coat,” and the “I’m still going outside even though it’s -20°F” parka. Bonus points if your closet has a designated “car emergency blanket” year-round. There are also Minnesotans who just have 1 coat and they wait as long as they can to truly use it.

You might be from Minnesota if… you consider 40 degrees warm.

When the temperature hits 40°F in March, Minnesotans break out shorts, fire up the grill, and start talking about how nice it is outside. Meanwhile, visitors are still bundled like they’re climbing Everest. Just this last weekend it got up to the mid 70’s and if you think people werent doing water slides…then you might not be Minnesotan.

You might be from Minnesota if… you know the difference between Duck Duck Goose and Duck Duck Gray Duck.

The rest of the country is wrong. We stand by it. Gray Duck is not just a game — it’s a cultural identifier.

You might be from Minnesota if… you say goodbye 12 times before actually leaving.

Minnesota goodbyes are legendary. First, there’s the initial goodbye. Then the follow-up conversation. Then the “one more thing.” Then the chatting by the door. Then the driveway conversation. If you make it to your car in under 20 minutes, something went wrong.

Another way to think of it…we take 1 step to leave and 2 back in.

You might be from Minnesota if… you instinctively say “Ope.”

Dropped something? Ope. Bumped into someone? Ope. Walked into a room slightly earlier than expected? Ope, just gonna sneak right past ya.

You might be from Minnesota if… you’ve debated the best hotdish recipe.

Hotdish isn’t just food — it’s tradition. Everyone has an opinion, and someone’s grandma definitely makes the best one.

The good news is that you can make all sort of varieties….but people are biased on the “best one.”

You might be from Minnesota if… lake plans are considered sacred.

Weekends are booked around cabin trips, pontoon rides, and figuring out who’s bringing snacks. If someone invites you to “the lake,” you don’t ask questions — you just show up ready to relax.

And not just lakes…cabins too. You don’t mess with a cabin weekend.

You might be from Minnesota if… you still enjoy all four seasons.

Yes, even winter. While it might be long, there’s something special about fresh snow, cozy evenings, and the excitement of spring finally arriving.

Final Thought

Minnesota is known for its friendly people, beautiful scenery, and strong sense of community. The little quirks and shared experiences create a sense of belonging that makes the state feel like home.

If you laughed at even a few of these, chances are you’ve embraced the Minnesota way of life. And if you didn’t… just wait until your first winter — it tends to convert people pretty quickly.

Ope… looks like you might be from Minnesota after all.
